With a quiet sigh of relief, Murphy flicked off the microphone pack tucked into the waistband of his jeans and sent Tasha an appreciative look as she stepped up, ready to distract and deflect the crowd from him.

They’d perfected this over the years—him finishing up with his demonstration and her taking over after, talking about following his company on social media, about the timeline for custom work, and pointing out what gnomes sitting around their display were still available for sale.

It took the crowds’ attention at the perfect time: when he was done interacting with people and just needed to get away.

Murphy ducked behind one of their taller tree-shaped wooden displays and was just about to slip the pack off his waistband and undo the wire connecting it when a voice interrupted him.

“You strippin’ down, honey?”

Murphy glanced up, saw Jem leaning there, looking absolutely gorgeous as he lounged against the wall, and grinned. “I didn’t know you were coming today til I looked over and there you were.”

They hadn’t discussed today’s plans this morning. Murphy had been too busy trying to make time to pull Jem’s briefs off one last time to discuss minor inconveniences like plans.

But he hadn’t been too busy to finally exchange numbers, either, and he’d assumed that after this was over, he’d text Jem and ask if he wanted to hang out.

He’d only promised himself that he wouldn’t be so uncool as to actually put “hang out” in quotations. It turned out that once he got a taste of Jem Knight, he couldn’t wait to take another bite.

Jem chuckled. “You just about swallowing your tongue was too cute to avoid.”

He’d totally made it obvious by stammering and sweating and of course, flushing bright freaking red. Anyone from town who’d seen them at the pie bakeoff or at the ice skating social the night before would know exactly why he’d turned into a bumbling idiot.

He was not particularly subtle; he never had been.

“You didn’t have to come,” Murphy said and watched as Jem’s expression flickered.

Shit. He’d said the wrong thing.

“Did you not want me to?” Jem asked, before Murphy could hurriedly add that of course he was thrilled that Jem had.

“No, no, no,” Murphy said. “I’m glad. I’m just…”

Jem grinned at him, helping untangle him from the cord just as he was convinced he’d gotten it irrevocably caught in the buttons of his shirt.

“Adorable? Sweet? Too cute for words?” Jem teased under his breath.

“Uh,” Murphy stammered.

Jem like this, in a dark green sweater, with a few days of dark scruff and that intent look in his eyes, was so potent he was impossible to resist.

Murphy didn’t even want to try.

“I wanted to come,” Jem said simply, then. “Wanted to see you in action, and I was pretty impressed.”

“Just pretty impressed?” Murphy asked, finding his voice again.

“Okay, seriously impressed,” Jem said. “Tasha said you normally take the afternoons off after these, but I thought…maybe you might want to play hooky with me.”

“Do I want to…” Murphy trailed off, shaking his head.
